Typing Speed Test
You have 30 seconds. Type the words as they appear below.
How the Typing Speed Test Works
You have 30 seconds to type as many words as you can. Random words appear one at a time. Type each word correctly and press space to move to the next. We track your Words Per Minute (WPM) and accuracy — both speed and precision matter. WPM is calculated using the standard formula: 5 characters = 1 word.
Typing Speed Benchmarks
| WPM | Rating | Who Types This Fast |
|---|---|---|
| 20–30 | Beginner | Hunt-and-peck typists, first-time learners |
| 40–50 | Average | Most adults, casual computer users |
| 60–75 | Above Average | Regular typists, office workers, students |
| 80–100 | Excellent | Professional typists, developers, writers |
| 100+ | Elite | Competitive typists, court reporters, speed champions |
Tips to Improve Typing Speed
- Learn touch typing: Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF-JKL;) and never look down — this alone can double your speed
- Practice daily: 5 minutes of typing practice every day beats 1 hour once a week
- Focus on accuracy first: Speed comes naturally once your fingers know where every key is. Correcting mistakes costs more time than typing slowly
- Use proper posture: Sit upright, keep wrists floating (not resting), and position the keyboard at elbow height
- Warm up your fingers: Do a quick typing test before starting work — it primes your muscle memory
- Read ahead: Look at the next word while typing the current one — reduces the mental pause between words
